As fall transitions into winter and leaves continue to blanket lawns and streets, the City of Beavercreek is reminding residents and businesses that municipal leaf collection is not offered and proper disposal is required.
Property owners are encouraged to manage leaf debris in environmentally responsible ways. Suggested methods include composting leaves in designated areas, mulching leaves directly into the lawn using a mower capable of handling such material, or contracting a local landscaping or leaf removal service.
The city also urges residents to follow several key do’s and don’ts to protect local waterways and stormwater systems:
Do:
- Place compost piles away from creeks, ditches, and storm drains.
- Ensure any leaf piles awaiting private pickup are located clear of drainage systems and stormwater infrastructure.
Don’t:
- Dump leaves into streams, creeks, or other water bodies.
- Place leaves in storm sewers, drainage ditches, or driveway swales.
Improper disposal of leaves can obstruct stormwater flow, cause localized flooding, and lead to costly repairs. It can also result in violations of the city’s Illicit Discharge Ordinance (Section 159), which prohibits anything other than stormwater from entering the system. Violations may lead to a Notice of Violation and further enforcement action.
Residents may also take advantage of the yard waste drop-off site offered by Greene County Environmental Services. The facility, located at 2145 Greene Way Blvd. in Xenia, accepts leaves, grass, and brush. Brush should be no more than 8 feet long and 4 inches in diameter; any brush over 4 inches in diameter must be cut to firewood length. Items not accepted include stumps, apples, nuts, dirt, and sod.
