The City of Beavercreek always hosts Trick or Treat the night of Halloween, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.

While Halloween is a fun holiday known for costumes and treats, it also brings serious safety risks. The Beavercreek Police Department offers the following tips to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night. Please report all suspicious activity to the Police Department by calling 9-1-1. Have a safe and happy holiday!

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters:

  • Choose fireproof costumes with bright colors or reflective materials.
  • Carry a flashlight or glow sticks so you can be easily seen.
  • Make sure costumes are not too long to prevent tripping.
  • Carry only flexible swords, knives and props.
  • Choose face paint or makeup instead of masks that can block vision or breathing.
  • Trick-or-treat with members of your household, a trusted adult, or with a group.
  • Plan a trick-or-treat route in advance and set a return time.
  • Tell parents where you plan to trick-or-treat and stay in familiar neighborhoods.
  • Walk, don’t run, and stay on sidewalks.
  • Look both ways before crossing streets and only cross at corners.
  • Always watch for cars backing up or turning.
  • Never accept rides from strangers.
  • Visit homes with porch lights on.
  • Respect others’ property. Avoid trespassing or entering dark areas.
  • Be cautious around animals.
  • Accept treats only outside of homes and never go inside.
  • Never eat unwrapped candy, opened candy, fruit or homemade treats.

Safety Tips for Parents and Guardians

  • Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Remind children not to enter a stranger’s home or car.
  • Remind children drivers might have a hard time seeing people, especially at dusk.
  • Stick to well-lit areas and neighborhoods.
  • Inspect all treats before allowing kids to eat them.

Safety Tips for Homeowners

  • Keep yards well-lit if handing out treats; turn lights off if you’re away to discourage visitors.
  • Remove tripping hazards such as ladders, hoses, leashes and flower pots.
  • Consider using battery-powered candles in jack-o’-lanterns instead of real flames.
  • If using real candles, place pumpkins in a safe place away from potential hazards.
  • Keep pets indoors to prevent escapes or accidental bites.

Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Slow down and stay alert in residential neighborhoods. Children may move unpredictably.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
  • Eliminate distractions such as cell phones.
  • Turn headlights on earlier to improve visibility.
